Editorial Review

At the East Bay French-American School in Berkeley, California, the students and teachers grow a garden of delicious herbs and vegetables.Their curriculum includes tasting, cooking, and eating the harvest to establish a connection between the earth and daily life. This well-put-together book teaches even gardening novices how to do it, too. The book features colorful line drawings, photographs of the kids in action, delicious recipes that even five-year-olds can help prepare, and great little sidebars on subjects as diverse as "Composting," "How Flowers Drink," and how to hold a "First Sprout Party." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for teaching about seeds.
This is an excellent book for younger students (K-3) about seeds and plants.I am using it as part of my summer school reading/writing program.First, I read the book to the students andwe planted little radish seeds (they grow quickly) in see-throughplastic cups.Later, the students read the book out loud to oneanother and we discussed the seed to plant concept. They also kept ajournal to record their observations of their seeds withillustrations about every other day. This book presents a greatopportunity to combine reading, writing and science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, simple explanation of plant life.
This book's big, colorful illustrations and simple language do a superbjob of explaining subjects such as plant reproduction, seed dispersal, pollen transference, and seed germination.Although intended for a youngeraudience, I read this book aloud to my fourth grade students to quicklybuild their background knowledge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very sweet book
This is one of the first books we ever bought for our daughter. At 2 months old the shiny flower petal tabs and bright colors held her attention. Now at 13 months she will sit and look at it alone and also with Mommy.Salina Yoon's illustrations are very bold and colorful. The lady bugs, blue birds, butterflys and flowers are captivating. The text is short and rhymes. Just right for a book beginner!

3-0 out of 5 stars Spring Fever
This book is extremly cute. It tells young children about springtime in a way that rhymes. It tells you about the ladybugs, the bumble bees, the birds, and the butterflys. All in a way that younger kids can understand ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outrageous, funny and an inspiration
"A Burst of Firsts" is wonderfully written and illustrated in a larger than life scale which fits hand in glove with the inspiration that flows from every colorful and witty page. All the main characters, the doers, shakers and brakers are fully cranked and in real life had to be. These folks exceeded the epectations of others and themselves. Susan Montgomery Williams is clearly surprised and awed at what she can do, which underlies the theme of the book, which Susan whimsicly floats through. Brian Ajhar's pictures are hilarious and brilliantly done. I loved the first men on the moon "kangas". I was in outback Australia in 1969 when moon walking happened. With a group of miners in a picture theater we witnessed the astronauts hoping across the moon. Out of the dark came the comment which bought the house down, "They are like a coupla bloody kangas" (outback for kangaroo)5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for an education, love it for the illustrations!
What a wonderful book! The brillant illustrations fill the pages with humor! And color! And action! The poetry fills a child's mind with thoughtful imagery. But the illustrations and poetry put together are enough to spark a child's creative side into full throttle!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book share!
I own this book and recently purchased it for my son's kindergarten classroom. I read it to the class because they were getting ready to plant flowers to be braught home on Mothers Day and it was the first day of spring! The children can relate to the things that Fran likes and tries to feed her flower! They all enjoyed the book and laughed many times. We talked about the illustrations when we turned the pages and they really liked the bright and beautiful colors used. It was FUN reading this book, it kept their interest and most of all it was great seeing the smiles on their faces!

5-0 out of 5 stars Glow sunny mood while readind this book
Well, well, well.Surely the story is short for ages of 4 to 8.But it is an edifying one with wonderful episodes and illustration. As I can recall, this is the first book in which I find the illustrator changes a characters outfit throughout the book.Slowly flip the pages and youll find the sun inside of you heart is shining when you see Fran and Fred go out of the back door and see the beautiful big flower.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fran's Flower-FUN-FUN-FUN!
I bought this book the other day--for ME!I loved the illustrations and thought the story was fresh and fun! I, of course, shared it with my 4 year-old daughter, and she had me read it several times! It is now one of OUR favorites! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Field of Sunflowers
This book was a great book which showed the reader beautiful photographs of how to plant sunflowers.I would like to grow some sunflowers next year and make a sunflower house just like they did in the story.I especially liked the photo which showed the artists who came to paint the field of sunflowers, then toward the end of the story the farmer invited his friends and neighbors over to have a dinner party on the lawn under the oak tree next to the field of sunflowers. This was a beautiful book which certainly inspired the reader to become interested in sunflowers if he wasn't already. ...
