1-0 out of 5 stars Tedious detail, awful imagery, not for young children
My 7 yr old brought this home from the library.Cute furry kittens on the cover and a cute title. But the story has so much detail about every house and scene that the story is incredibly slow. The characters are all small town and portrayed as odd and grumbly. Here is some text "Good thing it's Sunday...he never swears on Sunday, otherwise the air in the kitchen would be as blue as that shirt."What? The reference is to Mr. Williams who is a school janitor but seemingly hates small creatures and is not that thrilled with children. When he was little they "drowned kittens in a rainbarrel behind the barn."In nearly every other page of this cumbersome 147 page book, some reference to death is made, usually about the impending death of the kittens if Mandy doesn't find a home for them.Oh and there's the side story about the squirrel being run over by a car leaving an orphaned squirrel baby.Come on! Did I mention the butcher shop?
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is the first in the Animal Ark series. "Kittens in the Kitchen" features as a heroine, Mandy, daughter of two veterinarians in rural England. Surrounded by pets and wildlife, Mandy is predisposed toward a great interest in animals of all kinds. Her natural curiosity and determination serve Mandy well in finding and helping animals in need.
3-0 out of 5 stars A great book for your animal-loving child
Apparently my daughter (age 6) enjoyed the two Animal Ark books she picked up at the school book drive, because she picked out several more on her last trip to the library. This is the first book in the series, and introduces us to Mandy, her parents, grandparents, and her best friend James. After a stray cat has kittens in the kitchen of her school's custodian, Mandy decides to try to find homes for the kittens to keep the custodian from "getting rid" of them.Because this is the first book, the characters aren't as well developed yet, and the story is more predictable than the others we've read.It also had a much stronger animal rights theme than I've seen previously. However, I doubt that my daughter noticed much of that, and she certainly enjoyed listening to me read her this book.Overall, this is a good book for a child that loves animals, especially kittens. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Parents and teachers, BEWARE
If you have a sensitive child, BEWARE of this book. One early chapter describes in agonizing detail the suffering, euthanasia and burial of a beloved poodle.Any child who cares about animals will be distressed reading this chapter, as I and my 8yo daughter were.We could read no further. Her classmate then told me "that's not all, look at this!".She pointed to an illustration from another chapter, where movie actors are shown running from something - note the man on the right with a (fake) bloody dagger protruding from his chest. This book does not belong on your child's reading list.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first Animal Ark
THis was my first animal ark book and I absolutly love it. I have read it many times and have always enjoyed the ending. I have expanded my collection to include many other books but this book is one of my personal favorites.

This is one of my favorite animal ark books! It is about an owner who comes into the ark with an Old English sheep dog puppy that isn't responding. It turns out that the pup is deaf and cannot be a working dog. Then one day Mandy and James are having a dog wash and at the end of the day they find and old English sheep dog puppy supposedly abandoned in a water puddle.I won't give the book away but it has to do with a puppy mill and two people mixed up in it!Please read this book it is great! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher recomends the "Animal Ark" series
I am thrilled to finally find a book that both boys and girls enjoy equally well. The "Animal Ark" books have the "aaw" factor of cuddly animals that the girls love and the suspense factor to hold the fleeting attention of the boys. These books NEVER sit on the shelf! Although the target audience and reading level are younger students, the 12-14 set like them just as much. A lovely respite from Harry Potter, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Stallion
STALLION IN THE STORM is an excellent book. Anyone who loves mystery and animals will love this book. I recommend readers should be ages 8 and up. Fantastic! Great! That's what I say about this book. Ben M. Baglio the author, has made two series that I've read some of, ANIMAL ARK and ANIMAL ARK HAUNTINGS. This is one of his ANIMAL ARK HAUNTINGS. This book is a type of ghost story, crossed with a mystery story. The setting is mostly Folan's Stables. Folan's Stables is in the country and is a racing horse stables with a yard for racing in. The main characters are Mandy and James. Mandy is an animal lover and can't stand animals in danger. James is an animal lover too, and to show it, he has a black Labrador retriver named Blackie because he's black. He also helps Mandy rescue animals in danger. Dr. Adam Hope is Mandy's dad, also a doctor at Animal Ark, and the temporary horse vet at Folan's Stables. In this book Folan's is having trouble. The horses are unsettled and get all jumpy at races. "She didn't even have a chance to run." This is what Mandy said when a horse didn't want to run a race. Could it be because of the mystery incident that happened at the stables? Or are the stables haunted? And why is the owner ignoring the stables? Find out by reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Mandy and her best friend James are very excited when Mandy's father promises to take them with him to visit Folan's Racing Stables, but when they get there they realize something is very wrong. Many of the jockey's that ride at Folan's think that Tibor, a stallion who died in a race is haunting the stables. It's now up to Mandy and James to find the truth and save Folan's.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive
My 4th-grade daughter, who tends to get B's in reading, selected this book because the cover made it look inviting to someone of her age. However, she found the vocabulary difficult and distracting. I inspected it, and had to agree. Don't put a cute fuzzy animal on the cover of a book with a vocabulary meant for junior high.

My son and I chanced upon the Animal Ark series at his elementary school's book fair. My son is 9 years old and reads above his grade level (4th), but it is hard to find chapter books that interest him. I was thrilled when he chose to read this book practically non-stop instead of spending so much time on the computer. An interesting story that includes appealing animals is perfect for readers his age. We bought 2 other books from this series at the book fair (he didn't stop reading until he finished them too), and I will be ordering many more for Christmas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pony in the porch
Pony in the porch is a great story by a great author. A new girl in Mandy's school owns a horse called Prince. But then Prince starts to get ill. Susan wants to enter him into a competition but Mandy knows he is not well enough. Mandy saves Prince just in time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not Spectacular ...
This book was pretty good, but it wasn't excactly the best book in the series. I mean, what are the chances that a stuck-up, rich girl wuold want a cute little backyard pony as opposed to a fancy, imported Warmblood show horse or something? Welsh ponies aren't very tall, (I know because one of our horses is a Welsh and he's tiny)and I can't picture someone like Susan Collins riding a little brown brown pony with her heels 3" below his barrel! Apart from this weird point, it was a charming story and I admire Mandy's dedication to Prince.

My Idea about the book is that i like it alot.I like it because I like animals.I think people that like animals would like the book.Somthing I do not like about the book is it is like a kids book.It is long but the words are a little to easy.So If we have a nother book asinmentI think I may read a more harder book. But not to hard but just a little more difficalt. And work my way up harder then harder.I think you would like the book because the fact that it is about a dog.But i think you would not like it because you could read it in like two days.Thats my idea about the book.

Have you ever taken care of an abandoned animal? Well, Mandy Hope has. Mandy and her parents have a place for abandoned animals called Animal Ark. In this great book Dog at the Door by Ben M. Baiglo one day Mandy was making dinner in the kitchen and there was a knock at the door. Mandy was scared to open the door and suddenly she faced her fears. There was a golden retriever and its leash was caught on a flower pot so she couldn't get to the door. Mandy unhooked the dog and then took her into the house. The dog just looked around and whimpered. Then she layed in front of the stove. Mandy then saw that this dog was pregnant and thought, "Why would someone abandon a pregnant dog." A little bit later her dad came downstairs. Read more
