4-0 out of 5 stars Blast off to Space Info
Teaches basic vocabulary and ideas related to space and various spacecrafts (probe, satellite, etc.).Colorful and varied book design.Has select vocabulary words in boxes with an appropriate photograph.Text is straightforward. For example, "The plane part of the space shuttle can be used again and again. It takes off like a rocket, then it glides back to Earth and lands like an airplane." Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book was given to my 4 year old for his birthday. The book is fairly easy to read, and provides photos and descriptions of new vocabulary words. It's a challenge for those who are beginning to read solely for the purpose of reading, but it's a delight for those who devour everything about rockets and space! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great early reader!
My son is 7 1/2 and just getting to the point where reading is less of a chore. This book has many of the skills he needs to practice and does so in an informative, engaging way. Lots of the words end in "silent E" or "ing"...I'll have him read a couple of pages a day and these small, consistent efforts are really yielding fruit. I should warn the squeamish that there are pics in there showing snakes eating rats and other animals. But 7yo boys are notorious for finding such stuff cool (so do I). Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm only seven And it is great
I just learned to read in first grade. The pictures were so great that I really wanted to read it. I started and finished in one day. I don't like reading that much, but I don't mind reading when it is something cool like snakes!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Violent bugs! Discordant Text.
Predator insects star in the Eyewitness Reader Book, Bugs!Bugs!Bugs! by Jennifer Dussling.Following in the style of other Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness books, Bugs!Bugs!Bugs! overflows with clear, eye-catching, color photographs. The cover photograph may attract reluctant readers with its graphic photograph detailing a preying mantis chomping its teeth into a captured fly.Readers enter a world of extremely magnified, floating insect photographs on white backgrounds. The images depict insects attacking each other or standing alone.4-0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Buggy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying Through the Galaxy.
STAR PILOTS is actually an inaccurate title for this young readers Star Wars book. The book really doesn't have much to say about pilots, but is all about space craft flown in the Star Wars universe. While there are a few non-space vehicles described, e.g. podracers, most of the book is dedicated to famous Star Wars vehicles.X-Wings, TIE Fighters, the Millenium Falcon, the Executor, Slave 1, and the Invisible Hand are all mentioned as well as escape pods and Republican gunships. The book is filled with pictures from the movies, which makes it attractive for young readers. Though this is a level 3 book, many of the words seem more difficult than that too me. However, the books chronological order makes it easier to make sense of it all. Overall, this is a great book for young Star Wars fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars a tour of the great flying vehicles
"Star Pilot" is a tour of Star Wars' great flying vehicles. The title isn't entirely accurate since the focus isn't actually on pilots, but rather the machines. Beyond this, the scope is broader than space ships alone as the book includes pod racers and republic gunships. The scope includes the entire saga, starting with the droid control ship seen in the first minute of the "Phantom Menace" and ending with the Super Star Destroyer, seen in Episode six's final battle. The chronological order makes the book comfortable to follow. While the text is large, the vocabulary is much higher than the self-described level 3. The illustrations are large, high-quality and extracted from the films. While not comprehensive by any means, "Star Pilot" is an enjoyable tour of the most important vehicles of the Star Wars saga. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book so, so much!
I love this book so, so much because it has a map. I learned that he swims from the warm water to the cold water. There's not much food in the warm water but there's lots of food in the cold water. I learned that a whale's tail goes up and down but a fish's tail goes side to side.

5-0 out of 5 stars summary of the prequels
"Galactic Crisis!" is a summary of the Star Wars prequels. As with the films, the plot begins with the blockade of Naboo and ends with the new hope that infant Luke Skywalker will eventually become a Jedi and help restore the Republic. The chronological order will help clarify episodes one through three for readers. The illustrations are large, high-quality and extracted from the films. "Galactic Crisis" is an enjoyable journey through the Star Wars prequels.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Origins of Darth Vader.
STAR WARS: GALACTIC CRISIS! is a Level 4 DK Readers children's book. It was written for youngsters who have a proficient reading level in mind. The book tells the story told in the first three episodes of George Lucas Star Wars saga: THE PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, and REVENGE OF THE SITH. The book is filled with pictures from all three movies and includes a vocabulary at the end of the book. This book is intended for children, but adults who are Star Wars fans can enjoy it, too--it actually filled in a couple of gaps from THE PHANTOM MENACE and ATTACK OF THE CLONES that I didn't get from just watching the films. Overall, a great gift for young Star Wars fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good beginner book on carniverous plants
We bought a few carniverous plants from a nursery, which is how my kids got interested in the subject. I borrowed this book from the library. The book further peaked the kids' interest in the plants (they check the plants every day). We got a lot out of this book. In fact, we read it over and over and over again for so many time that I bought a copy.4-0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness Reader, Plants bite back
Another interesting book from DK that kids will love. It was well written and kept my interest all the way to the end. Editorial Review

What does it take to hold down a job in space? Linda, an astronaut on a space shuttle, describes all the ups and downs of her thrilling job in this Level 2 Dorling Kindersley book. It takes a lot of preparation and training to take a rocket trip to space. Linda has to pass medical tests, practice moving on a machine that mimics weightless space, and learn how to repair a telescope underwater (which is a bit like being in space). Once the shuttle lifts off, Linda floats around in zero gravity, eats food contained in sealed packets so it doesn't drift away, exercises on special machines, and dons a jet-propelled backpack that enables her to walk out in space and repair the broken telescope.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Space tale not just for kids
Linda is an astronaut. Her fourth mission involves repairing a telescope in outer space. Combining color photos and illustrations with a simplevocabulary makes this another winner in the DK Eyewitness Reader series. Itcan be easily accessed by those starting to read on their own. Fact boxesare scattered throughout the book and interesting space facts are on aseparate page. The details of an astronaut's training and work are woveninto a story which will hold the attention of almost any reader. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book but not for Just Starting Readers - a review of DK's "Tale of a Tadpole"
This is another of the Eyewitness Readers series.Labeled as Level 1 --Beginning to Read-- I think that it would be a little too much for a real beginning reader.[I think of a real beginner as one who might start with the first Bob Books.]
5-0 out of 5 stars Eyecatching and manageable for beginning readers
I wanted this to be a book my child could read to me easily, as we are moving on from phonics readers and the like. The pictures are great, as is the case with most DK books. The only word beyond my five year old was 'tongue' which was one of the picture words (i.e. one of about eight words that are clearly defined by a picture within the book). There were no 'gh' words or other tricky ones to trip a beginning reader up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to read, then read to learn!
While living in Africa we would often rescue frogs from our pool. Sometimes eggs had already been laid and the eggs were wrapped in a clear jelly. In the stream near our home we would collect tadpoles and take them home to show mom. Sometimes we found what we thought were miniature frogs. They were just baby frogs and we were sent back to the stream to release them so they could grow up and be productive insect hunters.Read more

Editorial Review

In the area between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico lies the most mysterious expanse of water in the world: the Bermuda Triangle. Over the last 50 years, 1,500 people have disappeared here without a trace, and many more have experienced bizarre and inexplicable incidents. Throughout history, ships, planes, sailboats, and flying boats have encountered thick yellow fogs out of blue sky, compasses and other navigational instruments going haywire for no apparent reason, and peculiar unidentified underwater crafts. In Andrew Donkin's eye-opening book, readers will find a section on possible natural explanations for the mystery, and another on "out of this world" theories about what's going down in the Bermuda Triangle. 4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written
I purchased this for my son who is 9. He enjoyed it to my surprise and pleasure! It is well illustrated and made him think outside the box ( not that hard for a nine yr.old). The questions this book generates in the young reader makes it a valuable book in theireducation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for the legendary lost city of Atlantis
I was always more interested in the "real" Atlantis that the ones that popped up in fiction ever since I read a "Reader's Digest" article that explained how archeologists were looking at the volcanic island of Thera in the Aegean sea as the legendary island. The most interesting part of the article talked about how the volcanic explosions that destroyed Thera may well have been the cause of the plagues of Egypt, all of which are apparently associated with volcanic eruptions.Since I am planning a trip to Greece early next year that could involve a few days on the black sand beaches of Thera, I have been doing a bit of research on both the place and the legends of Atlantis.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
A bought this book for my 8 year-old and ended up reading it myself.I've done a fair amount of my own reading on Atlantis and to my surprise I found this to be a really well written overview of many famous Atlantis ideas. The book begins with a nice retelling of Plato's original story. There are some really stunning illustrations in the book - from the original artwork showing the capital city of Atlantis as it might have been, to many photographs of undersea ruins etc.The author has done a great job, and produced a book that I and my son enjoyed in equal measure! ...
