5-0 out of 5 stars Great Skill Builder
I recommend this book for anyone who would like to help their child develop pencil skills.Do not worry if your child does not immediately excel with this book, just remember all children develop differently and reach the point where they can follow instructions and do workbook skills at different times.Hold off for a while if needed and re-introduce once in a while until the child is ready.Once the child is ready - you will be surprised how interested in the book they become and how quickly their skills improve.I advise following the workbook instructions that you not let the child do more than 2 pages per session because if they are left wanted to do more they will eagerly come back to it the next time.
5-0 out of 5 stars the perfect intro to pre-writing
Great book, I bought it for my son at 2 1/2 and he Loved it.It really helped him learn to hold a pencil and develop his motor skills, most importantly it kept him enthused about it.Great quality book, thick pages nice pictures to keep little ones interested.I'd let him do 2 or 3 pages, but if it was up to him he'd do the whole book at one time.I just hope I can keep his enthusiasm for learning at this level: ) He's now graduated to uppercase letters, I can see that 'my first book of tracing' helped him with his letters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful quality - builds a great foundation
I looked at many workbooks in the book store before settling on this one, and I'm glad I did!It starts out with basics - connecting pictures and drawing straight lines horizontally and vertically - using very cute, clear graphics. It then progresses to diagonal lines, curved lines, zig zags, more complex curves, lines that cross over each other, etc.In this way, it gradually builds writing skills in a way that is fun for children.I also love that the paper is thick and high quality, the colors are vibrant, and the accompanying pictures are detailed and well-done.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
My [...] son received this book for his birthday and it became a fast favorite. He loves to push the buttons and listen to the music. He also quickly found the "stop" button and likes to stop the music if he doesn't like my singing--then he laughs. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
My son received this as a first birthday present and still reads it everyday (7 months later!)The pop-ups are all torn, but he loves the music. This is one of his favorite books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book to teach 2nd graders of an Elementary school in Mexico. They loved the activities!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beginning ESL
Although this book is more for children, there are some pages I was able to use for my adult ESL course. There are some nice diagrams along with good ideas on how to begin a level one class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resourse
I recently taught ESL in China for a few weeks and found this book incredibly useful. Although marketed as being for grades 1-4, I found this book helpful for even high school students--it depends more on the level of language proficiency than anything else. For example, I used the "parts of the body" page to review what my students already knew, and then they filled in more complicated words such as thigh, shoulder, ankle, etc. The money page has very realistic drawings of the various coins, all of which were new to my students. The food pages were very helpful before moving on to more complicated lessons on ordering in a restaurant. A great book for a modest price! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking to Get the Kids Involved? This is the book!
I am not the biggest fan of the Everything books:I have found their text to be over-simplified.However, here, it plays in their flavor tremendously.Like the fantastic Mom and Me Cookbook byAnnabel Karmel, (which I can't recommend enough if you are looking to cook cutesy-crafty items with your kids, especially younger ones) this book gives illustrated utensils needs (like if it needs an oven to make, then there's a little picture of an oven at the top of the recipe) and starts with a glossary of cooking terms and safety guidelines. It's got a great little guide for how to set a table, and is full of puzzles for the older kids to do and tips about any number of things that have to do with the meal.It also includes a difficulty level which is terribly handy when you're cooking with younger children or children spaced far apart (like mine). It also has a very handy conversion chart (you know, how many cups in a gallon sort of thing) that for me, is worth the purchase price alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes...
I borrowed this book from the library not so much so my daughter could cook; she's 17 months, but more for me so I could find some good things to make her; I'm not much of a cook.I really like the recipes that were in the book so I returned it to the library and plan on purchasing this book real soon!

I recieved my book in great condition and within a weeks time. Was great, I have continued to order from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!
Hi, I'm 11 years old and I know this book is for like 3 year olds, however, I loved it! My five year old sister liked it too! Even my 13 year old neighbor is obsessed with it. I know all kids-at-heart will love this heart warming story about crayons that learn to live together in harmony through a five year old girl that buys the crayons at the toy store. It is a great book, with a great message, and great pictures. I really hope, on behalf of all the kids that love it, and the publishers, that you click the mouse and buy this excellent piece of children's writing and enjoy it for years to come. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Diversity & Team Workshops
I use this story with just about every adult and youth group I speak to.I use it to build upon our diversity and how if we all get together (as the crayons do in the book) the picture is complete.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dreaded Dissapointment
I am a huge fan of the Series Of Unfortunate Events & found this book only slightly entertaining. It in no way added anything to the series in any way.If you have read the books & the Unauthorized biography then you have all the info you need to not waste your money on this book.If you have not read the Unathorized Biography I would recomend spending you money on that first!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not an unpleasant book but an informative one
The claim on the back of "The Truth Behind A Series of Unfortunate Events: Eyeballs, Leeches, Hypnotism, and Orphans--Exploring Lemony Snicket's World" is that this volume is the "ultimate unauthorized companion guide to the facts behind Lemony Snicket's wild world."Since this is the only one I have seen it is hard to say whether that is hyperbole or not. What Lois Gresh has done in this book is to look beneath the fiction into the realities of the Lemony Snicket universe.Violet Baudelaire likes to invent things, so Gresh explains how to build a telephone and a hot-air balloon mobile home and throws in some fascinating tidbits about who really invented the telephone and little-known facts about hot-air balloons.Young readers will also be able to read about real child inventors and their amazing inventions. The information provided is much more expansive than you would find in an annotated edition of something, but that is the general intent.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read for Young and Old!
What makes the Lemony Snicket series of Unfortunate Events so entertaining is that they are books seemingly aimed at children and that yet can be read by adults as well, with as much pleasure if not more than children. These short novels are filled with sly jokes, clever asides, and enough silly situations that they cannot be mistaken for anything serious. That's what makes them so funny - they are an inside joke and all of the readers of the books are insiders.Reading Lois Gresh's wonderfully inventive "The Truth Behind A Series of Unfortunate Events" is a treat. The book provides an intelligent and yet funny look at the oddball facts and concepts mentioned in the books but never completely explained.Unlike the previous reviewer, you need a sense of humor to enjoy this book.It takes the Lemony Snicket world and examines it under a microscope. It's not meant to be a substitute for a Lemony Snicket book but a companion to all the Lemony Snicket books and it does a great job at being that. This is a book that any fan of the LS series who wonders about the many odd topics mentioned in the adventures but never explained will cherish. It is not a book for adults who possess no sense of curiosity. This is a book I think both kids and adults will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars the hardship in baseball
Teammates5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book teaches you alot about how blacks were treated back in the day. When Jackie Robinsion was signed to the Dodgers the fans and players treated him really badly. People threw stuff at him. Then a young teammate stood up for him and saved him from being ban from the team. So you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars classic
A simple telling of how Jackie Robinson came to play in the major leagues, this book portrays the prejudice he faced in a basic way that children can understand. And it shines a bright light on a quiet moment: PeeWee Reese's brave public declaration of solidarity with his teammate. This book has been my son's favorite for the past two years, since he was five. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ~ except for the pony tail
Overall a very nice doll. The attention to detail is great. The doll has a cloth body, and an intricate removable dress just like the big dolls. The $12.97 along with free shipping make it worth the price. It is very small ~ on the order of a Kelly doll. Only negative ~ the doll's hair is not really up to AG standards. The front it pinned back and the little tendrils are sweet but the pony tail leaves a lot to be desired. It is more on the order of Barbie hair and I am sure it will look ragged in no time. If I had paid $20 plus shipping I would have been very disappointed and sent it back. All that said ~ my daugther loves it! She received it for Easter along with the Felicity short story collection. I am sure she will be reenacting Felicity's adventures and now her big doll can have her own AG doll too. If the hair will be an issure for you and you don't need this particular doll you may want to consider Josefina with her nice tight braid.

4-0 out of 5 stars a doll just like the regular-sized american gir ldolls!!
Looking for an american girl without the huge price, or a doll for your american girl doll? This felicity mini doll would be ideal for you. She really does move like a regular doll, and you can take off her clothes too. Her hair is shiny and reasonably untangled, and she comes with her own mini book, which is abriged. I really like this doll as a doll for my dolls. I wish that she could come with a line of clothes for mini dolls, though. Then, it would be really fun to own an american girl mini doll. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Athletic Shorts
Athletic Shorts by Chris Crutcher is a collection of six short stories revolving around six different characters. More than a mere collection of sports related stories this book looks at everyday situations and problems about teen life. Weight problems, pushy parents, uncomfortable situations, racism, homosexuality and death. Packed into less than 200 pages Crutcher is able to captivate readers through this book with his humor as well as his insights into the young adult mind. My favorite story of the six is "The Other Pin" about a guy named Petey who is "volunteered" by his best friend to wrestle Chris Byers who has a habit of not just beating all opponents but humiliating them in the process. If that wasn't bad enought Chris Byers is also a girl. Though some of Crutcher's stories are emotional and heart wrenching all are worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This really is a wonderful collection, one that anyone seeking to understand the mind and actions of a teenage boy or even girl should read. Chris is simple, straightforward, and always fun to read. I'd highly recommend this to any student and even some teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
This book is great for introducing children to Gay and Lesbian issues through characters and themes. Athletic Shorts is a collection of stories about athletic boys facing challenges in their lives, including " A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune," about a boy with two sets of gay parents and "In the Time I Get," in which Louie, the main character of Cruther's Running Loose becomes friends with a gay man dying of AIDS. I also recommend Am I Blue? Coming Out from the Silence by Marion Dean Bauer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This was one of my childhood favorites, but it now features much more vibrant art!
I loved this book as a child and I still remember my mother reading it to me vividly to this day.She has since passed away, however, the underlying message of the book about having confidence in oneself stuck.I think this theme of "knowing you can do it" is a value message for children to learn.
1-0 out of 5 stars This book is sexist
I have four children and when they were younger I read this book to all of them on a regular basis. However, after I finally figured out that all the "good" engines are female and all the "bad" engines are male I started changing up the pronouns when I read it to them.Imagine what the reaction would be if the stereotyped engines were not male?I speak against this book whenever I have an opportunity for just this reason and was disappointed to see it featured at Starbucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book

I used this book to teach a summer drama class for a local daycare to grades 1st-5th.The kids couldn't get enough!I used this book the whole summer, and it taught them how to work togather, even with their age differences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Amelia...We Love You So!
This book in the series finds Amelia Bedelia and her employers going camping...as always Amelia's literal minded approach means lots of misunderstanding between what the Rodger's tell her to do and what Amelia does.As always, Amelia Bedelia does EXACTLY as she is told (let's hit the road leaves Amelia hitting the road with a stick and I think we can all guess what happens when it's time to pitch the tent)!!In the end, its Amelia's big heart (and extraordinary cooking ability) that saves the day (as usual) when the Rodger's get fed up with all the misunderstandings!!Young readers will love to hear this story read out loud, but it's also a find book for readers just starting out!Amelia, I think, will be around for generations to come, the stories are simple, but hilarious and the illustrations are just darling!Always a good way to get a discussion going about how we use words and how a word or phrase can have several meanings...plus it's just plain fun!

Editorial Review

In the fifth "epic novel" about the extraordinary CaptainUnderpants--"faster than a speeding waistband... more powerful than boxershorts"--the formidable superhero is under siege by a terrifying new enemy, themerciless bionic-powered Wedgie Woman. Will Captain Underpants overcome his fearof spray starch in time to save the world from the evil schemes of Wedgie Woman? No one knows... except maybe George and Harold, the imaginative fourth-gradetroublemakers (imagination is not allowed at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School),who are also the creative minds behind Captain Underpants and Wedgie Woman. Yousee, it all started (as it usually does) with a comic strip drawn andillustrated by the boys. When their mean teacher Miss Ribble gets her hands onthe comic book, their troubles really begin.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten minutes that could affect a lifetime!
This is an interesting and useful book.It provides a wide range of activities to use with children to help them learn about themselves and understanding others. Many of the activities offer ways to accommodate for older or younger audiences, and some are specific to ages. The range of topics addressed is rather inclusive, and the activities are designed to appeal to all types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The activities offer a creative approach to each topic, and are nice springboards for deeper discussions.I am certain this book will be utilized both in my home and in my classroom!
